The Cost of Being Transgender
- Posted on: Nov 30 2018
Unfortunately, sometimes the timeline of our ideal transition is actually impacted by money (or lack thereof). Keep reading to learn about some of the costs you may expect with certain transgender treatments or surgeries.
Though you do not have to undergo hormone therapy, many transgender people choose to have HRT (Hormone replacement therapy) and even surgery. You may take estrogen injections if you were born a male or assigned a male gender at birth. If you were born in a female body, you may wish to live as a male and take testosterone. Finding an insurance provider that pays for such treatments may be rare, as these treatments are deemed “not medically necessary” in many places of the world, still.
The cost of HRT can vary depending on where you are, but it’s a treatment that is often taken for years and years, so the cost can add up quite quickly. You may expect to pay around $20,000 for doctors visits and hormones for around a two year transition period.
Plastic surgeries like facial feminization surgeries can help you feel more feminine and allow other people to treat you and see you as you are. These surgeries are not likely covered by insurance either, and the cost may vary wildly. Because every plastic surgeon is different, you will need to do your research to find the best doctor, as well as to find a reasonable price. Depending on where you live, you may be subject to a higher market price. You may expect to spend between $20,000 and $50,000 for a facial feminization surgery, depending on what your needs are.
There are more costs, too, that may go into helping you feel more yourself without being so visible to the public eye. Breast augmentation, “bottom surgery”, and other procedures (not to mention therapy costs) may all add up to around $100,000 after it’s all said and done. Crowdfunding may help, and you should explore that option if it’s important to you. That being said, you don’t need every procedure available. Choose the path that suits you and go from there.
